Jacob didn’t get to spend much time with Camille before the first bell rang, but any amount of time with her was enough to make him feel dreamy. He didn’t know why she was interested in him all of a sudden, and he didn’t question it. Maybe it was fate. Or it could have been God working in one of His mysterious ways.

Jacob was still in a good mood when he got to second period, so the smile he wore for Mrs. Milligan was mostly genuine. His history teacher stood in the doorway during passing period. Jacob approached her, even though his mother didn’t tell him to do so.

“I’m sorry for walking off when you tried to talk to me yesterday.”

Mrs. Milligan smiled, too. “Oh, it’s okay, Jacob. I understand you weren’t in a good mood.”

“Yeah, but it was still rude, and it won’t happen again.”

Mrs. Milligan reached out and gave his shoulder a comforting squeeze. Today Jacob didn’t mind the affection.
